April 25--27, 2001 Beijing, P.R. China
The international symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM) has been the major forum for discussion of the application of computer methods in the mineral industries for four decades and 28 APCOM symposia have been successfully held so far. On the threshold of a new millennium, China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) and Technische Fachhochschule Georg Agricola University of applied Sciences (TFH) in Germany jointly sponsor the 29th APCOM (APCOM2001) to promote international cooperation and exchanges related to theoretical and practical aspects of computer applications in mining. This is the first time that China has hosted the APCOM since it made its debut at the University of Arizona in 1961. This is also the first time in its 40-year history that APCOM has been held in a developing country as well as in Asia areas.

Beijing, the capital of the People?/font>s Republic of China is the Host City of the APCOM2001. The nation?/font>s political and cultural center, Beijing is a hospitable city with many places of historical interest and beautiful scenery. Opening policy has brought it a civilized, peaceful and flourishing atmosphere. It has become a melting pot for the modern metropolitan and traditional Chinese cultures. Do not miss this great opportunity to attend the Symposium in an auspicious environment and exchange your ideas and scientific experiences with colleagues from all over the world. At the same time, visit the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Ming Tombs, the Temple of Heaven and the Lama Temple.

The response from all over the world has exceeded our expectations and a wide range of high quality papers from North and South America, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia will be presented in this symposium. Major topics to be covered include all aspects of computer applications in the mineral industries. Most of the papers to be presented are collected in the volume of proceedings published by A. A. Balkema of Netherlands, copy of which will be available to each registrant.

World-renowned Chinese hospitality awaits all participants of this symposium. The Organizing Committee and I look forward to welcoming you in Beijing.
